Things are moving fast in Virginia.

According to Gun Owners of America, lawmakers pushed more than 15 gun control bills in just 60 days and some of the biggest ones are now front and center.

The focus? Two bills, SB 749 and HB 217, that would ban a wide range of commonly owned firearms.

We’re talking semi-auto rifles, pistols, and even some shotguns, Based largely on features like threaded barrels or adjustable stocks. Standard-capacity magazines are also on the chopping block, with anything over 15 rounds potentially banned.

And here’s the key detail: Newly elected Governor Abigail Spanberger has already signaled she’s ready to sign them.

That’s a big shift from just a year ago, when former Governor Glenn Youngkin vetoed similar efforts. Different administration. Different outcome.

According to GOA, that change is exactly why things are moving so quickly now. Their argument is pretty straightforward:

These (AR-style platforms) aren’t niche firearms. They’re some of the most commonly owned guns in the country used by millions for lawful purposes, including self-defense.

And under these proposals, future purchases could effectively turn law-abiding Virginians into criminals overnight.

GOA also points to the Supreme Court’s New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen decision, arguing that broad bans like this don’t line up with the nation’s historical tradition of firearm regulation.

Translation? They expect this to end up in court. They’re already preparing for it.

The group says it’s working with state-level organizations to challenge the legislation the moment it’s signed, framing this as part of a bigger national fight over so-called “assault weapon” bans.

But before it gets there, they’re pushing for action now, encouraging Virginia residents to contact lawmakers and weigh in before the bills become law.

Because if this goes through, it won’t just be another policy shift. It’ll be one of the more sweeping changes to firearm law the state has seen in years. And once it’s signed? The next battle moves from the legislature… to the courtroom.
