Lonoke County just sent shockwaves through Arkansas politics.
Political newcomer Aaron Spencer has defeated incumbent Sheriff John Staley and challenger David Bufford in the Republican primary for Lonoke County Sheriff, pulling in over 50% of the vote and locking up the GOP nomination.
Yes, that Aaron Spencer.
The same man who made national headlines in October 2024 after he was charged with second-degree murder for shooting and killing a man accused of sexually abusing his daughter. According to THV11, the suspect had been released on bond and allegedly captured Spencer’s daughter again before Spencer chased him down and shot him. The case is still pending.
And now he’s one election away from becoming sheriff.
Turnout was high. Emotions were higher. The race even got more chaotic when the county clerk resigned a week before the election, forcing a last-minute appointment just four days before ballots were cast. State officials reportedly stepped in to help steady the ship.
Despite all of that, Spencer didn’t just edge out a win, he cleared the field.
Now the real uncertainty begins.
If Spencer is convicted before taking office, he cannot serve as sheriff. If he wins in November, takes office, and is later convicted, he would be removed and the Quorum Court would appoint someone to finish the term.
But here’s where it gets murky: what if he’s convicted between now and November?
State rules clearly allow parties to replace a nominee if they withdraw or pass away. They don’t clearly address felony convictions before a general election. That means Lonoke County could be staring at some serious legal gray area if that scenario plays out.
For now, local Republican leadership says Spencer is the nominee, period. No plans to swap him out.
If he’s acquitted, he can take office like anyone else. If he’s convicted, the county’s leadership shifts overnight.
Either way, this isn’t just another local sheriff’s race anymore. It’s a political and legal roller coaster with a courtroom sitting right in the middle of it.
November just got a lot more interesting.
