SAINT DAVID, AZ — A homeowner shot and killed a 67-year-old man who appeared to be forcing his way in through a window in the early morning hours of Sunday, August 30, 2026, while his family, including two small children, was inside the house, according to the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office, the agency that patrols Saint David.

The sheriff’s office was notified of a possible burglary in progress in a Saint David residential neighborhood. The homeowner said it sounded like a window got broken, and when he checked his home security system, he saw someone standing immediately outside the residence. No one inside the home was injured, including the two small children, as reported by KOLD.

The homeowner told deputies he then moved into the main living area of the home. He saw a shadow near a window. It looked like someone was trying to get inside. He was armed, and he fired, apparently striking the person at the window.

The camera did real work here. A home defense plan is layers, not just a gun: locks, lighting, alarms, cameras, and a firearm you can reach. Each layer buys you information or time. The camera feed confirmed someone was outside trying to get in, and that confirmation gave him the seconds he needed to arm himself and put himself between that window and his family.

Police officers from the nearby city of Benson responded to assist and were first on the scene, where they found a man outside a window of the home who appeared to be unresponsive. They requested medical personnel from the Benson Fire Department and St. David Fire and began life-saving measures, which continued until medics arrived and took over. Resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful, and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The two agencies are separate. Benson is a city with its own police department. Saint David is covered by the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office, whose deputies patrol the unincorporated county and whose detectives now own this case. Benson officers simply got there first, which is how it often works in a county this large, and whatever happened at that window happened before any badge arrived, with the homeowner as the only thing between two small children and the person outside.

Sheriff’s Office detectives assumed the investigation and preliminarily identified the deceased as a 67-year-old man who had also been living in the Saint David area. His identity is being withheld pending completion of next-of-kin notification.

More from USA Carry:

“This is an active and ongoing investigation, and our detectives are working diligently to establish the facts and circumstances surrounding this incident,” Sheriff Mark Dannels said in the release. “While we understand there will be questions and speculation, it is important that we allow our investigators to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation before conclusions are drawn.”

No charges have been announced against the homeowner, who has not been identified in any official statement. Detectives are continuing to gather evidence and interview witnesses, and prosecutors make the final call on whether a shooting was lawful.
