“He Fired, I Fired”: A Springfield Homeowner’s Tale Of A Fatal Self-Defense Shooting

-

Springfield police have cleared a resident of any wrongdoing after he returned fire on an intruder who shot at him first on Maiden Lane early Friday morning. The incident, which left 28-year-old Anthony Walker Jr. dead, is being officially investigated as a justified act of self-defense.

SPRINGFIELD, OH — It’s the kind of thing you think only happens in the movies or in the “big city”, and not on a quiet street in Springfield, Ohio. But at 12:56 a.m. Friday, the tranquility of Maiden Lane was shattered by gunfire that turned a local home into a fight for survival.

According to the reports, a 28-year-old man named Anthony Walker Jr. was killed in the 1700 block of Maiden Lane. But this wasn’t just some random act of violence; it was a confrontation that proved exactly why so many of us choose to carry, even when we’re just relaxing at home. The homeowner, faced with a sudden, deadly threat, didn’t have time to wait for a 911 dispatcher to tell him what to do. The intruder reportedly pulled a firearm and fired the first shot.

Defending the Home Front

Neighbors like Dana were waking up, thinking they heard the usual “fireworks” that pass for noise in their quiet town. They were shocked to see the street roped off, police everywhere, and the sobering reality that a life had been taken right next door. It’s a gut check for all of us. You see these headlines and you think, “that won’t happen to me.” But the guy on Maiden Lane likely thought the same thing before he had to pull that trigger to save his own life.

The Springfield Police Division has been clear: this was self-defense. The shooter, who clearly had his wits about him, managed to defend himself against an armed assailant. He’s alive today because he was prepared. That’s the cold, hard truth of it.

Safety Tip: The “I’m just at home” mentality is exactly where criminals want you. Whether it’s 1 a.m. or 1 p.m., if you carry your firearm daily, make it a habit to have it accessible at home, too. You don’t need to be “tacticool,” but you should have a plan for how to access your firearm quickly if a breach occurs while you’re in your pajamas.
