Home Intruder Dead After Warning From Homeowner: “I’m Armed”

-

A Somerset Township homeowner acted in self-defense when he fatally shot an intruder who was attempting to force entry through a kitchen window early Saturday morning. Pennsylvania State Police confirmed the intruder was warned before the shooting occurred and that the physical evidence at the scene supports the homeowner’s account.

SOMERSET, PA — The early morning silence in Somerset Township was shattered by a violent attempted home invasion that left one person dead. Around 2 a.m. on Saturday, March 14, 2026, Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) troopers were dispatched to a residence in the 100 block of Locust Street following reports of a break-in.

The homeowner told investigators he was jolted awake by the sound of aggressive banging at his kitchen window. Upon investigating, he discovered a male intruder attempting to smash through the glass to gain entry to the residence. The homeowner reportedly provided a clear warning that he was armed with a firearm and was prepared to defend his property. Despite the warning, the intruder continued his attempt to enter the home, leading the resident to fire a single fatal shot.

Corroborating Evidence and the Castle Doctrine

When troopers arrived, they discovered the intruder’s body near the back door of the home. Crucially, investigators found immediate evidence of a broken window and signs of forced entry, which align with the homeowner’s statement. While the resident was initially detained for questioning, which is a standard procedure in any homicide investigation, the preliminary findings have corroborated his claim of self-defense.

Somerset County District Attorney Tom Leiden has stated that no charges have been filed at this time. Pennsylvania’s “Castle Doctrine” provides strong protections for homeowners, allowing the use of deadly force against someone who is unlawfully and forcefully entering an occupied dwelling. The identity of the deceased will be released once next-of-kin notifications are complete.

Safety Tip: Home defense at 2 a.m. is a matter of seconds and clear communication. If you are awakened by an intruder attempting to breach your home, your first priority is to secure a defensive position while calling 911. Providing a clear verbal warning like “I have a firearm and I will protect myself” can sometimes deter an intruder, but it also serves as vital evidence for your defense if a shooting occurs.
