Homeowner Shoots Aggressive Dog During Violent Florida Attack

-

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

A terrifying dog attack in a quiet Florida neighborhood ended with a homeowner using a firearm to stop one of two aggressive dogs after they mauled a family pet and injured a woman.

According to WPLG Local 10, the incident happened in Lighthouse Point, where two loose dogs escaped from a nearby rental property and began attacking without warning.

Family Dog Targeted First

Witnesses said the chaos began when two large American Staffordshire mix dogs rushed toward a man who was outside with his grandchild and his elderly spaniel, Brody.

“The dog was not letting up,” one neighbor told Local 10. “It grabbed his neck really good.”

The dog’s owner desperately tried punching and pulling the attacking animal away, but nothing worked.

“I think he was trying for a little bit even before I got there,” the witness said.

With his dog still being mauled and unable to stop the attack by hand, the owner retrieved a firearm and shot one of the attacking dogs.

The aggressive dog died at the scene.

Second Dog Attacks Another Neighbor

The violence didn’t stop there.

According to Local 10, the second loose dog ran off and attacked a woman at another nearby home, biting her foot before authorities arrived.

Broward Animal Care later captured the surviving dog, which has since been placed in quarantine while the investigation continues.

Officials also boarded up the section of fencing where the dogs reportedly escaped.

Neighbors Say It Was a Scary Scene

Residents said attacks like this are extremely unusual in the neighborhood.

“We all pretty much have dogs,” one neighbor explained, adding that everyone is generally familiar with each other’s pets.

He added that the shooting likely prevented an even worse outcome.

“Protecting the baby, protecting their own dog—it was a scary situation with these two dogs,” the witness said.

A Difficult but Necessary Decision

Cases involving dangerous dog attacks often force people into split-second decisions.

Here, witnesses described an aggressive dog that refused to release its grip despite repeated attempts to physically separate the animals. With a child nearby and the attack continuing, the owner ultimately resorted to deadly force to stop it.

No criminal charges have been announced, and authorities continue investigating how the dogs escaped from the property.

The injured spaniel survived the attack and is reportedly recovering at home.

Self-defense doesn’t end when the threat goes down. That’s when the real battle begins. Lawyers. Prosecutors. Headlines. USCCA Members never fight that battle alone. Find out how.
