A reported burglary in West Houston ended in tragedy overnight after gunfire inside a South Kirkwood home left one man dead and another charged with murder.

According to reporting from KHOU 11 and KPRC 2, Houston police were dispatched just before 12:30 a.m. to a home in the 1200 block of South Kirkwood Road after a caller reported hearing glass shatter and someone possibly forcing entry.

Police say the caller believed someone was actively breaking into the residence and contacted their spouse to come home. At some point after that, investigators say an altercation occurred inside the home, and gunshots were fired.

When officers arrived, they found two men suffering from gunshot wounds inside the residence. Both were transported to the hospital. The homeowner, described as a man in his 60s, later died from his injuries. The second man, believed to be in his 40s, survived and has since been charged with murder.

A handgun was recovered at the scene, though investigators are still working to determine who it belonged to and how exactly the confrontation unfolded.

In a heartbreaking development, a man who approached reporters at the scene told KPRC 2 that the homeowner was a pastor at a nearby church. That detail has not yet been officially confirmed by authorities, but the individual described the church community as devastated by the loss.

UPDATE: The victim has been identified as pastor Pedro Cantu Garza.

Detectives are still trying to determine whether the home was specifically targeted or if this was a random burglary attempt. It also remains unclear what led to the deadly exchange of gunfire inside the residence.

For many gun owners, stories like this are a sobering reminder of how quickly a suspected break-in can spiral into life-or-death violence. The facts are still unfolding, but one thing is certain: a family and possibly an entire church community are now grieving.

We’ll continue to follow this case as more information becomes available.
