Minnesota just took a big step toward sweeping gun control but whether it actually becomes law is a different story.
An expansive gun bill cleared the state Senate, targeting so-called “assault weapons,” “high-capacity” magazines, ghost guns, and binary triggers, according to reporting from FOX 9 Minneapolis–St. Paul.
Supporters are calling it a win. Critics are calling it unconstitutional. And right now, it’s stuck somewhere in between.
The push comes in the wake of the Annunciation church shooting, where the attacker fired more than 100 rounds in just minutes. Families affected by that tragedy were front and center at the Capitol, pushing lawmakers to act.
For them, this Minnesota gun ban is about preventing the next one.
“This is the reality that we live in,” one lawmaker said, pointing to the conversations parents are now forced to have with their kids.
But not everyone is on board. Republican lawmakers pushed back hard, arguing the bill not only raises serious constitutional issues but could actually make people more vulnerable.
“There’s still bad people entering schools,” one senator said. “We need a different approach.”
That “different approach” argument is one you’ve heard before: more emphasis on security, less on restricting firearms.
And it’s not just talk. One GOP senator even went as far as saying he wouldn’t comply with the law if it ultimately passes.
That’s how divided this is. Even some supporters were reportedly surprised the bill made it through the Senate at all. And now it heads to a tied House, where GOP leadership has already signaled it has little chance of surviving.
So what you’re looking at is a bill that:
At the same time, the legislation isn’t just about bans.
It also includes roughly $20 million for school safety and additional funding for mental health support, something both sides have pointed to as part of the solution.
Still, the core fight remains the same. Do restrictions on firearms prevent violence or do they miss the people actually committing it?
That’s the debate playing out here. And it’s not slowing down anytime soon.
