What started as a domestic dispute in Washington State turned into a deadly scene and now we’re learning more about the people caught in the middle of it.
According to reporting from KING 5 News and KOMO News, the April 2 incident in Puyallup began as a family argument inside a home before spilling out into the street and onto a neighbor’s driveway.
That’s where it escalated.
Police say 47-year-old Arnino Velasco Guanlao shot both of his stepdaughters during the dispute. One of them, 23-year-old Christiannel Lyle Macapagal Maningat, was killed. Her sister survived but was hospitalized with serious injuries.
Investigators say a neighboring homeowner witnessed the chaos and intervened.
The neighbor opened fire, killing Guanlao and stopping the attack.
Police have not made any arrests, and authorities say the homeowner is cooperating with the investigation as they determine whether the use of force meets Washington’s legal standard for defending others.
But beyond the headlines, there’s a deeper layer here.
Maningat (known to friends and family as “Shiannel”) is being remembered as kind, compassionate, and deeply loved. According to a family statement, she was studying computer science at the University of Washington and preparing to graduate.
“She made people feel heard and special,” her family said, describing her as someone who always looked out for others and carried a constant, uplifting presence.
That’s the part that often gets lost in stories like this.
Because while the legal questions will play out, (whether the neighbor’s actions were justified, whether the force used was necessary), the reality is that this started as a family dispute that turned deadly in seconds.
And it didn’t stay contained. It spilled into the open, into a neighborhood, into someone else’s driveway. That’s when a decision had to be made.
Step in, or don’t.
In this case, the neighbor acted and based on what we know, likely prevented further harm. Still, the outcome is sobering. Two people dead. One seriously injured. A family shattered. And a reminder that violence doesn’t always look like a stranger breaking in.
