There’s nothing wrong with another AR-15, but after you’ve owned a few, another black direct-impingement rifle can start feeling like more of the same. The PSA JAKL 5.56 Pistol in Flat Dark Earth is for shooters who want familiar AR controls without buying another ordinary AR.

The JAKL mates an AR-style lower with a long-stroke piston system, a monolithic upper, and a nonreciprocating side-charging handle. Its recoil assembly is captured entirely inside the upper, so there is no traditional AR buffer tube hanging off the back.

PSA normally lists this compact 10.5-inch JAKL for $1,099.99. The current Daily Deal knocks $200 off the price, bringing it down to $899.99.

Top Features

  • Long-stroke gas piston: Runs cleaner than a traditional direct-impingement AR.
  • Compact 10.5-inch barrel: Handy for the range, home defense, or a properly secured go-bag.
  • Four-position gas block: Tool-free adjustment for different ammunition or suppressed shooting.
  • Ambidextrous side charger: Moves from left to right without tools.
  • Monolithic upper: Rigid, continuous rail space for optics and accessories.

Why Shooters Love the PSA JAKL

The JAKL combines the familiar controls and magazine compatibility of the AR-15 with the long-stroke piston operation shooters associate with the AK. Its recoil system is contained entirely inside the upper, eliminating the traditional AR buffer tube and allowing for a substantially more compact setup.

The 1:7-twist nitride barrel handles common 5.56 NATO loads, while the adjustable gas block gives shooters useful control when changing ammunition or adding a suppressor. For less than $900, this is a serious alternative to piston guns costing considerably more.

AmmoLand’s Travis Pike put a 5.56 JAKL rifle through more than 500 rounds of AAC Sabre and steel-cased Tula without a malfunction. He found the rifle slightly front-heavy, but that weight helped keep it planted during rapid fire. The recoil was light, muzzle movement was limited, and hits on steel at 200 yards came with boring regularity. Read AmmoLand’s full PSA JAKL review.

This 10.5-inch pistol is shorter and handier than the rifle AmmoLand tested, but it retains the same basic operating system and controls. It is a practical choice for a compact range gun, home-defense setup, or properly secured vehicle gun—especially for shooters who want something different without paying premium imported-rifle money.
