10mm is a strong option for home defense against multiple threats, concealed carry for shooters who can manage extra recoil, hunting, and outdoor carry where bears or mountain lions are a real concern.
What’s your budget?
Per Armscor’s ammo experts, 10mm often costs about the same as, or less than, comparable defensive calibers, even though it produces more velocity. Exact pricing varies by load and retailer.
Can you handle the recoil?
A typical 10mm load uses a heavier bullet, around 180 grains, compared to the 115- to 124-grain bullets common in 9mm. Heavier, faster bullets mean more recoil, and shooters who train regularly adjust quickly.

Ammunition & Maintenance
10mm ammunition costs about the same as comparable defensive calibers. The 10mm is also considered the most powerful of the mainstream semi-auto pistol rounds, with performance on par with or exceeding the .357 Magnum.
A typical 10mm load produces a muzzle velocity of 1,008 fps and muzzle energy of 406 ft-lbs, compared to .45 ACP’s 840 fps and 368 ft-lbs. Because the 10mm’s diameter is slightly smaller than .45 ACP, it can allow one or two extra rounds in the magazine.
The same routine care that applies to any RIA 1911 applies here. Most shooters don’t need a deep clean until they’ve put around 5,000 rounds through the gun, according to John, who recommends oiling after every range trip and focusing on the spots that show the most friction.
