Manhunt Ends When Homeowner Fires Back

-

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

A quiet community in Mississippi turned into a full-blown manhunt and it ended the way a lot of these stories do.

With a homeowner forced to make a split-second decision.

According to reporting from 16 WAPT and WJTV, Attala County deputies were searching for 41-year-old Chris Hughes after a violent series of events left two people dead and a neighborhood on edge.

It started with the killing of 67-year-old Tim Lawrence on a rural county road.

From there, things escalated fast.

Authorities say Hughes was picked up by his cousin, 46-year-old Jeffrey Mallett Jr., in a gray truck. That truck later crashed about four miles from the initial scene, and Mallett was found with gunshot wounds. He later died at the hospital.

At that point, Hughes was on foot. And that’s when things took a turn that hits a lot closer to home.

Deputies say Hughes made his way to another residence and attempted to break in. But this homeowner wasn’t waiting to find out what happened next. He was armed.

And when Hughes tried to force entry, the homeowner opened fire, stopping the threat. Hughes was later pronounced dead at the hospital, bringing the manhunt to an end.

Just like that. Three people dead. One community shaken. And one homeowner who had seconds to act.

Neighbors described the situation as shocking. People who knew Hughes said they never saw anything like this coming. And that’s the part that always sticks. Because it never looks obvious, until it is.

Sheriff Curtis Pope called the situation difficult to explain, noting that even after years in law enforcement, no two incidents play out the same way.

Translation: sometimes there are no warning signs. Which brings us to the real question.

What would you do?

You’re at home. Maybe it’s late. Maybe your family’s inside. And suddenly someone, who police say has already killed multiple people, is trying to break in.

There’s no time for a debate. No time to Google your options. No time to call a lawyer. You either act… or you don’t.

In this case, the homeowner acted, and based on what we know, likely prevented even more bloodshed.

It’s not a situation anyone wants to be in. But it’s exactly the kind of scenario the right to self-defense is meant for. Not the range. Not the debate stage.

Right there, in the middle of the night, when everything goes sideways.

The investigation is still ongoing, and authorities are working to piece together what caused Hughes to snap.

But for one homeowner in Attala County, the situation was already clear enough. A threat showed up at the door. And it didn’t get inside.

The right to defend yourself is guaranteed. Protecting your freedom afterward isn’t.Discover how USCCA Members are backed with resources, training, and trusted legal protection. Click here to get started today.
